Skye’s the limit

-

Shocking pictures show famous tourist spots on the Island of Skye completely overrun by cars as tourists flock to the island. Not only Skye that suffers from “over-tourism”. Here in the East Neuk of Fife we are similarly over-run by camper-vans and threetimes normal road traffic, the camper-vanners unloading their bikes and taking to the country roads, causing tailbacks of frustrated working drivers behind them. Roll on December!

Derek Farmer I thought Skye wasn’t an island any more.

Lost Faith Didn’t it occur to anyone when the Skye Bridge opened 23 years ago that it would bring more traffic to the island? Apparently not. Oops!

Norton Lux With almost a 50 per cent increase in tourism over the last two years is it surprising? Those cars seem well parked to me! Interesting to know the law on the double yellows. I think if your offside wheels are not touching the inside of the double yellows then you are fine. I was charged with that in Glasgow because my offside wheels were touching the inside of the double yellows.

The trouble is they don’t pump money into the local economy; they bring everything with them and sleep in tents.

What exactly are the tourists here for? The wee towns are being ruined and who benefits?

It’s not the number of tourists, it’s the number of cars that’s the problem. At some point, and no matter how loudly people moan about it, we will need to find an alternative to the car.
