What’s the last piece of clothing you bought?

I picked up some low-heeled silver sandals in Edinburgh while on tour, because the boots I’d brought to wear on stage were hurting my feet. It was a purchase under duress, but I love them.

What are you addicted to buying?

I don’t buy expensive ones because I’d lose them, but I find earrings irresistible.

Best ever bargain?

A skirt in an oversize rose print that I got for a couple of dollars at a thrift shop in Nashville. I have worn it on stage so many times I can’t count. I wish I could clone it.

Who has great style?

Julianne Moore. She is always herself; she wears her clothes beautifully but they never wear her.

Name your favourite high street shop.

I like H&M. Between the clothes and the home decor I can lose a couple of hours quite easily.

Any fashion disasters you’d care to tell us about?

For my very first ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) awards show, I bought an emerald green, puff-sleeved satin dress. It was everything awful about the late Eighties in one dress. The only thing pouffier than the dress was my hair.

What’s your favourite item in your wardrobe?

For sentimental reasons, a silver ring that my mother received as a bridesmaid’s gift back in the Forties. It’s got her initials carved on it, and it never comes off my hand. n Peters plays the Southern Fried Festival in Perth tomorrow, 7:30pm, tickets £30, call 01738 621 031 or see www.horsecross.co.uk Her new album Dancing With The Beast is out now on Proper Records.
