Tax work ‘perk’

-

Edinburgh could become the first local authority area in Scotland to charge firms for letting employees park at work. Councillors are considering a workplace parking levy as part of a campaign to cut congestion and air pollution.

Yet another way to penalise people for working

Paul Maclean We seem to be stuck with councils and other taxpayerfunded organisations that look backwards instead of towards the future; vehicle ownership has been increasing year on year but the infrastructure that we need to support this growth has fallen way behind. Instead of penalising car owners, how about penalising councils and their employees for being out of touch with reality? Perhaps the public should park their cars on roads and high streets throughout Edinburgh for a day, outside council buildings, councillors’ homes and Holyrood, to show their contempt for plans like this and the faceless people that dream them up.

Fish Supper What about people like hospital staff required to work shifts, during which getting public transport is impossible?

When it comes to planning, Scotland sucks! Huge housing estates are constructed without any shops nearby. Literally tens of thousands of homes in an area. They are unconnected to cycle networks, to other public buildings or to the out-of-town shopping areas. This means the Scottish Government and the local authorities basically encourage car use – necessitate it. The trains are completely unreliable too.

Excellent news. Progressive thinking for a change. The screaming and shouting from those who can’t see beyond the end of their bonnets will slow it down a bit but, eventually, 20 years behind most other countries, we’ll take back the streets from those who are too lazy and selfish to get their bums out of a car and on to a bus, train, tram or bike.

I’ve avoided Edinburgh for over 20 years because of its anti-car measures.

Put alternatives in place BEFORE punishing drivers. People will gladly abandon cars, but only if there’s a good working alternative.

Yet another attack on car drivers by this mad council! Waste £1 billion pounds on a vanity tram with the prospect of the extension, so we will penalise and tax car drivers to recoup our losses.

Tax, tax, tax and more tax. And of course, more government. Isn’t it fantastic to have the SNP control more and more of our lifestyle choices? I wonder what they will let me eat for lunch today.
