Rail fares across the country are to rise again from January. Peak fares will increase by 3.2 per cent next year, in line with the retail price index rate of inflation.

@Jimwaterson noted: “Your rail fare will rise 3.2% next year because it’s set using the RPI measure of inflation. That measure has been described as ‘very poor’ by the people who, er, measure it. It’s also used to set student loan rates. Alternate measure is lower, naturally.”

@Georgeeaton wrote: “UK rail fares are already five times higher than in Europe and have risen at twice the rate of wages since 2008 (42% compared to 18%).”

@Labourrichard posted: “Thousands of Scots will be rightly angry that rail fares are set to rise yet again. An annual ticket on the Glasgow-edinburgh line is set to cost more than £4,000. It’s yet another reason why we need publicly owned railways that serve the many, not just the few.”

@Davidschneider joked: “Rail fares to go up by 3.2% from January, which is quite a coincidence as 3.2% is also the percentage of trains that now run on time.”

#CELTIC

Sadness, schadenfreude and recrimination reigned after Celtic crashed out of the Champions League due to a defeat to AEK Athens. Attention quickly turned to Brendan Rodgers’ management and the Parkhead board’s recruitment policy.

@Johnnyfitba joked: “Incredibly rude of AEK Athens to deny four other European teams the chance to fulfil their life’s dream of a Champions League night at Celtic Park under those very famously expensive lights.”

@Chrispytoal added: “There are 2 people who should be shown the door at Celtic Park tomorrow – John Kennedy and Kolo Toure. They clearly are not up to the task they have been given.”

@Johnhartson10 tweeted: “Scratching my head as to why the Celtic money men wouldn’t back a manager that has had so much success... you have to keep moving forward... in particular when you are so dominant financially!”

@Chris_sutton73 wrote: “The blame game has to stop and it’s time for cool heads at Celtic... the manager and board could have handled things better! Celtic’s poor recruitment is the reason they are out! I don’t care about disco lights... time to sort this mess out starting with Boyata.”
