Double or quits in this game

-

0 The Corps Ensemble, writer Stewart Roche and actor Edwin Mullane reel you in

there are suggestions that the world we’re in is leaning towards something more mythic: a pub which seems to be haunted by a violent event which happened long before; a man pursuing another man through the streets of a foreign city, destined never to catch up.

Liam discovers his passion in life: a talent for playing

poker, but his desire for higher and higher stakes eventually puts him in danger. After winning far too much money from a Dublin drug dealer, he flees to West Cork to lie low, and all seems to be well – until the other Liam Wilson arrives in town.

While Roche occasionally takes too long telling his tale, it is sufficiently compelling,

and Mullane’s performance sufficiently assured, that we stick with it. At times familiar, at other times unsettling, the play keeps us hooked until the end. And when the denouement comes, we wonder why we didn’t work it out sooner, and that, too, is part of the game. SUSAN MANSFIELD
