Brighter future?
It is easy and probably appropriate to be pessimistic about the UK’S future as we stare into the Brexit abyss, but perhaps this will just be a blip in our relationship with Europe.
Much of the elderly Brexit vote was based on nostalgia for a bygone era of low immigration, empire and blue passports
But as the reality and challenges of Brexit eventually hit home, that Brexit-voting generation and its post-war nostalgia could be replaced by a new nostalgia for our time as European members – with all the quantifiable benefits that entails – and envy for the success of our former European partners.
Perhaps the long-term impact of Brexit will not be blue passports and bespoke trade agreements but Britain becoming a fully engaged member of the European Union.
