US senator John Mccain has died at the age of 81. The one-time presidential candidate and war hero died on Saturday following a battle with brain cancer, his office said.

@mashable posted: “Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Lindsey Graham, and others offer thoughtful, powerful remembrances of the decorated war hero and U.S. legislature’s ‘maverick’ Senator.”

@Stephenking tweeted: “John Mccain’s finest moment (for me) came in 2008, when a woman at a rally referred to Obama as an Arab. ‘No, ma’am,’ Mccain replied. ‘He’s a decent family man, a citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with.’ That’s manning up.”

@tribelaw added: “From John Mccain’s last book: ‘I hope those who mourn my passing, and those who don’t, will celebrate as I celebrate a happy life lived in imperfect service to a country made of ideals, whose continued success is the hope of the world.’ Now that was a man for all seasons.”

@Postroz said: “Today is the ninth anniversary of the death of Sen. Ted Kennedy, from the same brain cancer that has taken John Mccain.”

#POPEINIRELAND

Pope Francis touched down at Dublin airport yesterday for a 36-hour trip that will see him join an audience of 82,500 in the Croke Park sports stadium.

@northernsoul78 posted: “Rather than the Pope asking for God’s forgiveness, those in the Catholic Church who covered up the abuse and helped others commit these crimes should be criminally convicted of breaking the law. The survivors don’t need prayers, they deserve justice.”

@140whatnow added: “With every report, it gets harder to believe that a single priest could plead ignorance of what was going on. Every clergyman, no matter how admirable their actions or intentions, is wearing the uniform of a collaborator.”

@Darraghlawlor00 said: “So maybe you’re having a bad day, but imagine you were abused by a member of the Catholic Church as a child and now your country is welcoming it’s leader, who has not even truly apologised, with open arms.”
