Uefa to rule on Ronaldo ban extension

- By JAMIE GARDNER

Uefa has opened disciplinary proceedings over Cristiano Ronaldo’s red card against Valencia in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The Portuguese was sent off after half an hour of Juventus’ 2-0 win at the Mestalla after appearing to put his hand on the head of the Spanish club’s defender Jeison Murillo.

He has received an automatic one-match ban which cannot be appealed, and Uefa’s control, ethics and disciplinary body (UCED) will now look at the red card when it convenes on 27 September.

It is understood the UCED is unlikely to extend the ban as it is not going to be looking at any dissent in this case, nor the manner in which Ronaldo left the field. These can be aggravating factors when ban extensions are being considered.

Ronaldo left the pitch in tears after German referee Felix Brych decided to send him off.

goal which Juventus were attacking.

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri felt the video assistant referee (VAR) technology could have helped.

VAR was used largely successfully

at this summer’s World Cup but is not yet in use in the Champions League.

“Going down to ten men in the Champions League for an incident like that is disappointing,” Allegri said. “We

risked losing tonight with this and we’ll miss him for the next games too.”

Ronaldo will definitely miss Juve’s home match against Young Boys on 2 October. Any extension to the ban would

mean he would also miss the trip to face his former club Manchester United at Old Trafford on 23 October.

Two penalties by Miralem Pjanic gave Juventus the victory in Valencia.
