Accies move means more time in bed for Martin

Moving to Hamilton from Hibernian came as a “major surprise” to Scott Martin but he is determined to kick-start his career at Accies.

The 21-year-old midfielder, one of four deadline day signings, made his debut in the 1-0 defeat at Livingston last week and ahead of the visit of St Mirren today recalled the change in career direction.

He said: “This move was a major surprise but it suited me to a tee. I was at Hibs since I was 11 years old but it was time to move on and I wish them all the best.

“Hamilton is a great club to manufacture a good career. Lewis Ferguson is doing great just now, playing every week for Aberdeen. Greg Docherty went to Rangers and is banging goals in for Shrewsbury.

“Hamilton are a hardworking team and the style they play suits me.”

One by-product of Martin’s move to the South Lanarkshire club is less time spent on the M8 to Edinburgh.

He said: “I am based in Cambuslang, ten minutes away from Hamilton. My mum used to have to take me [to Hibs] when I was younger [but] now I can get an extra hour in my bed.”

St Mirren midfielder Ryan Flynn says his side must maintain their workrate against Hamilton to continue the feelgood factor following Oran Kearney’s positive start as manager.

Kearney kicked off by taking a point from Premiership champions Celtic but Flynn knows today’s trip to Lanarkshire presents its own difficulties.

“When you get that performance, it makes things easier and there is more of a bounce about the place,” he said. “But it’s a massive game on Saturday and it’s going to be such a difficult game.

“I think it was a little bit easier on Friday night with the atmosphere and on TV and under the lights. So we have to take it upon ourselves to put in that same performance and hopefully get the three points.”
