Slugs – only a mother could love them. Mind you, it’s probably more accurate to say parent, as these creatures are hermaphrod­ites. They usually live for 16-18 months, but sometimes up to six years, so that horrible brindle two footer that lives in your garden ain’t going nowhere for a while. If you do want to cut down the numbers, then avoid poisoning them with metaldehyd­e, as it’s been known to kill cats and dogs, and presumably wildlife too. Here are a few other suggestion­s. n
