Aitken and Findlay are shown the door

- By CRAIG STEWART

The cull of managers in Scotland continued yesterday with League 1 bosses Stephen Aitken of Dumbarton and Stephen Findlay of Airdrie both leaving their posts.

With Robbie Neilson appointed as the new Dundee United head coach yesterday, six clubs are currently looking for new bosses. In addition to Dumbarton and Airdrie, Partick Thisle parted company with Alan Archibald last weekend, while as Berwick Rangers, Queen’s Park and Stirling Albion are also without managers. Aitken was sacked yesterday just over six months after taking the Sons to the Irn-bru Cup final, which was their first showdown event in 107 years. Findlay departs little more than a year after taking over at the Diamonds.

Aitken joined Dumbarton in summer 2015 and successfully kept them in the Championship for two seasons – an achievement which marked them out as the best part-time team in Scotland.

A late play-off goal for Alloa denied safety back in May and a stuttering start to this season, which has been caused in part by a horrendous run of injuries and sees the side sit second bottom of the League One table, has resulted in Dumbarton deciding “with regret” to part company with their manager.

Aitken’s assistant Ian Durrant will take the squad for training tomorrow night, but his future beyond that has still to be discussed.

Findlay, who formerly bossed Airdrie and Queen’s Park under-20s as well as Fauldhouse Juniors, left his post by mutual consent.
