Murray and Soares fall at final hurdle but secure London spot

-

Jamie Murray missed out on a 23rd ATP doubles title after the Dunblane player and Brazil’s Bruno Soares lost yesterday’s Shanghai Masters final.

The No 6 seeds were bidding for their tenth title together and had reached their sixth final of the year without dropping a set, but that all changed yesterday. Poland’s Lukasz Kubot and Brazilian Marcelo Melo, seeded three, won last week’s China Open and completed a Far East double with an emphatic 6-4, 6-2 victory in just over an hour.

Murray and Soares still did enough in China to qualify for next month’s end-of-season ATP Finals in London.

Meanwhile, Caroline Garcia won the Tianjin Open with a

7-6 (9/7), 6-3 victory over top seed Karolina Pliskova.

The tournament’s two top seeds reached the final and the pair were closely matched as the first set went to a tie-break, in which Pliskova raced into a 5-1 lead.

However, the Czech suddenly made a series of errors and allowed Garcia back into it. Garcia saved a set point at 5-6 before going on to win the hour-long first set.

In the second set, Garcia stormed to a 5-0 lead and first served for the match at 5-1. However, she was made to

wait a little longer for her victory and secured the title with her sixth ace of the match.

Teenager Dayana Yastremska easily saw off the challenge of Wang Qiang in the Hong Kong Open final to win her first WTA Tour trophy.

The 18-year-old dropped only three games as she overcame her Chinese opponent with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in one hour and five minutes.

Camila Giorgi won her second career WTA title by defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3, 6-1 at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz.
