Aberdeen 1 Hibs 0 /Mackay-steven the hero

Gary Mackay-steven was the hero for Aberdeen last night, the winger scoring with a stunning 25-yard drive to secure a 1-0 Ladbrokes Premiership victory against Hibernian.

On a blustery night at Pittodrie, Mackay-steven capitalised on a mistake by Hibs defender Ryan Porteous – intercepting a short pass to Lewis Stevenson before firing low into Adam Bogdan’s net.

Mackay-steven, who has a habit of scoring against Hibs, said the swirling wind played a big part in his thinking. “It was really windy so you’ve got to try to get the ball down, you’ve got to look for mistakes and take your chances,” he said. “I’m happy to contribute to a big three points.”

The victory sees Aberdeen leapfrog Hibs into the top six and manager Derek Mcinnes heaped praise on the matchwinner.

“Gary’s pace and quality for the goal is what we expect from him,” said the Dons boss. “It was good pressure, he rushed their defenders and was on to the ball in a flash. And it was a fantastic strike. Every game needs big moments. Gary has shown that quality before and that was a big moment.”

Hibs drop into the bottom six after four games without a win. “I’m disappointed with the scoreline but not the performance,” said manager Neil Lennon. “We missed three great chances, and then the goal we conceded – we were in possession at the time.”
