For whom the bell tolls: New gate at Edinburgh’s Botanics symbolises garden’s strong links with Nepal

Sanjeev Kumar Rai, director general of the department of plant resources in Nepal, officially opened the new Nepalese Gate at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh yesterday. Mr Rai hung hung the bell and tolled it three times in keeping with tradition. The drystone gate symbolises the strong working relationsh­ip between RBGE and Nepal and was supported by the Friends of RBGE Small Projects Fund, and built with help from the Scottish Dry Stone Walling Associatio­n. The bell was brought back to Scotland by RBGE scientist Bhaskar Adhikari.
