Still Waters Run Deep: Honour for dedicating over four decades to patrolling and protecting River Tweed

Sixty-nine-year-old Eric Hastings, right, a recently-retired river guardian from Drygrange, near Melrose in the Scottish Borders, has been chosen as the winner of the 2018 Tweed Forum River Champion Award. Mr Hastings who received his award from James Hepburn Scott, chairman of the Tweed Forum, has dedicated over 40 years to protecting the wellbeing of the River Tweed. This has involved tasks such as tracking poachers and monitoring pollution. The Tweed’s salmon and trout are worth £24 million annually to the Borders economy and supports over 500 jobs.
