For many years I have carried a card indicating that any part of my body may be used in the event of my death, to help others, and my family know this and are in agreement. However, legally, there is a problem for those who don’t, with the proposed Human Tissue Bill.

It is a simple matter of ownership. I believe that my body is my own property, it belongs to me. When I have left it, if I have bequeathed my property to my family, it logically belongs to them. Therefore, if any part is removed without their permission, this is simple theft in law and they would be entitled to sue for damages. It does not belong to the NHS or the state.

This is the problem. I hope many more people will carry a card like mine in the future.
