Ref Mullan dies at 90

Bill Mullan, who refereed one of Scotland’s most famous games, has passed away at the age of 90.

Mullan was a category 1 ref from 1960 to 1978 and his career included the League Cup final in October 1971 when Partick Thistle stunned Celtic 4-1.

Mullan was also a Fifa official for ten seasons and was the only Scottish ref to take charge of a World Club Final when he handled the second leg of the 1971 contest between Uruguayan side Nacional and Greek side Panathinai­kos.

Another highlight in Mullan’s career was being appointed to the match between West Germany and East Germany in the 1972 Olympics.

After retiring, Mullan was the referee supervisor for the Edinburgh Referees Associatio­n until 1999.

His funeral service will be on Friday 23 November at St David’s Church in Eskbank, Dalkeith at 10.30am.
