Welsh side Connah’s go Wilde at Hampden

-

Welsh side Connah Quay’s Nomads reached the semifinals of the Irn-bru Cup by defeating Queen’s Park 2-1 at Hampden last night.

Spiders goalkeeper Jordan Hart recused his side twice in quick succession early on as he pushed a Michael Bakare shot on to the post and then stuck out a hand to deny the striker after he fired a low drive through a forest of legs.

Hart excelled again on 17 minutes, finger-tipping a header from Michael Wilde against the bar.

Connah pressed again well at the start of the second half but despite their pressure it was Queens who made the breakthrough, scoring after 64 minutes of the quarter-final.

A curling pass from Ciaran Summers released Lewis Hawke in-behind Connah’s defence and he sent a first time shot low past John Danby.

An equaliser looked on five minutes later when Rob Hughes curled in a shot that Hart fumbled before clawing off his line.

The leveller did arrive with nine minutes left when George Horan poked the ball in from a yard out after Wilde had headed the ball across goal.

It got even better for Connah’s on 84 minutes when Hughes and Michael Parker combined to set up Wilde who slid the ball home.
