Parents’ groups have called for an end to the practice of giving teachers gifts at Christmas – saying that it puts financial pressure on cash-strapped families. Organisati­ons have warned of the increasing­ly lavish nature of end-of-term gifts, which can include bottles of champagne, luxury candles or gourmet foods.

This gifts mentioned are just ridiculous, There is nothing wrong with a simple box of chocolates and I for one will keep doing this.

redshoesdi­ary Thirty boxes of chocolates just lines the pockets of the confection­ery companies as very few teachers are interested in eating their way through a year’s supply of chocolates. My wife would be happy with nothing and having a policy on that would make it clear to everyone.

A simple homemade Christmas card will suffice. perhaps the art teacher can hand out suitable templates to be used. But the power to stop this practice is entirely in the hands of parents.

I’d add that none of my teachers ever got (or expected) anything more than a card, except one who was getting married, when the whole class clubbed together to buy her an ornament (thinking back, she must have shuddered at the hideousnes­s of it!).

I find this astonishin­g, why should teachers receive any gifts, never mind this lavish nonsense?

Macborg One of my children has severe additional needs and not all of her needs are fully covered by the disabled education budget, her teachers have on many occasions gone above and beyond for my daughter so the giving of a Christmas present for me is the least I could do to show appreciati­on.
