The family of a teenager killed by her ex-partner have given a cautious welcome to a pledge by Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf to hold a public consultation on the parole system.
Michelle Stewart, 17, was stabbed to death in the street in Drongan, Ayrshire, by John Wilson in 2008.
Wilson, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison in April 2009, has been deemed eligible for temporary release despite only serving nine years behind bars.
The Stewarts want a series of changes to the parole system to improve the rights of victims – a socalled Michelle’s Law.
Their campaign calls for the increased use of powers to impose “exclusion zones” on offenders, and that the Victim Notification Scheme is toughened up so that victims and their families are given reasons for an offender’s release, and can make representations in person.
