PLAY-OFFS EXPLAINED

Play-off place is secured

Last night’s win over Israel means Scotland have won Nations League C Group 1, clinched promotion to League B and secured a place in the League C Euro 2020 play-offs. They will be joined there by Finland, Norway and Serbia. But if any of those four secure a place in Euro 2020 via conventional qualifying their place in the play-offs will be taken by the side finishing below them in their Nations League group.

When are the play-offs and how do they work?

The play-offs take place in March 2020. The four League C qualifiers are ranked one to four, with Scotland set to be ranked first. That would mean they would be at home for the one-legged semi-final against the side ranked fourth, probably Finland. The winners of each semi advance to a one-legged final, with home advantage decided by the drawing of lots before the semis. The winners qualify for Euro 2020.

What happens next year?

Traditional Euro 2020 qualifying, with the draw on 2 December in Dublin. There will be ten groups, the top two in each group qualifying for the finals. They will be joined in the finals by four sides from the Nations League play-offs.
