‘Disappointed’ Foster sees a third way

- By DAVID YOUNG

DUP leader Arlene Foster has rejected the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal and called for a Brexit “third way”.

Mrs Foster insisted the DUP’S confidence and supply agreement with the Conservatives remained “live” but again warned that her party would “review” the arrangement if the Brexit deal gets through Parliament.

“We shouldn’t just accept an outcome for the sake of it – we should try to get a deal that is good for everybody,” Ms Foster told the BBC’S Andrew Marr show.

“We want to see the Irish

backstop gone. There is no need for the Irish backstop so let’s get rid of it.”

Mrs Foster opened the door to the DUP supporting a Norway-style alternative, with the UK joining the European Eco-

nomic Area. “I’m not going to be proscriptive with the Government,” she said. “What I’m saying to the Government is this deal, this current deal, does not allow us to take back control.”

She refused to say if her party would support the Prime Minister in the event of a defeat on Brexit triggering a confidence vote. “We will have to see what happens at that time,” she said.

Asked if the Prime Minister had let her down, Ms Foster said she was “disappointed with the way this has progressed” and claimed the deal was “against everything [Mrs May] has said” about the Union.
