Action urged on dairy contracts

- By BRIAN HENDERSON

Dairy farmers have been urged to get involved in the forthcoming UK Government consultation on milk contracts to help secure a supply chain which is fairer for producers.

The UK’S four farming unions have repeated their support for regulated contract terms for dairy farmers and said they would be consulting their members extensively when the consultation is issued, in an effort to rebalance where the risk currently sits in the dairy supply chain.

The dairy farmer representatives of the unions said: “For too long, dairy farmers have shouldered too much of the risk in the dairy market and in many cases have been subject to unfair contract terms and trading practices.

“As outlined in the

review published in February, there is clearly an imbalance of power within the dairy supply chain.”

They said they wanted to understand the views of the industry on dairy contracts, especially with Brexit looming.
