Salmon farm standards must rise
Urgent action must be taken to improve standards at Scottish salmon farms, according to a Holyrood committee.
Following an inquiry into salmon farming in Scotland, the rural economy and connectivity committee has concluded that better regulation to ensure fish welfare and minimise environmental impacts are needed if the industry is to realise plans to expand.
Convener Edward Mountain MSP said: “There is a desire within the industry to grow. However, if this is to happen, it is essential that the serious challenges it faces, such as the control of sea lice, lowering fish mortality rates and reducing the sector’s impact on the environment, are addressed as a priority.”
