Fly whose flag?

-

Scotland’s culture, heritage and flag do not belong to any political movement but to everyone in the country, wrote Pamela Nash of Scotland in Union.

... and the Tories do not own the Union flag but they use it in their logo. Nash is a total and utter hypocrite

Dickie Tea Sadly it has become a symbol of division and has ceased to be the flag of a nation. It is tarnished with the curse of narrow-minded nationalism and there is no way back.

Persona Non Grata It is time to reclaim the Saltire. After the BNP and far right English nasties tried to hijack the Union Flag and St Georges Cross the people of England reclaimed the national symbols of the UK and England. Fly the Saltire and stand your ground, the Saltire belongs to Scotland, not the SNP.

Interested Reader “For many of us, our Scottish and British identities sit perfectly comfortably with each other and we recognise that being in the UK is best for Scotland” I can assure you that you do not speak for me.

Rab C Biscuit And the nationalists most definitely don’t speak for me, or for that matter the majority of us Scots

Icanseeclearly Nah. Let [Nationalists] carry on. It’s absolutely fair for them to fly the flag. The demonstrations, rallies and marches are impressive. Fair play. The problem is the attitude of some that “we are the true Scots (and you’re not)”. Building an inclusive movement towards independence remains out or reach, in part due to these divisive attitudes.

Ever Here Very few union supporting Scots don’t associate with the saltire with a degree of affection. Look at the rugby at Murrayfield. This is a nonproblem.

andrewbdickson I fear you miss the point, which is that nationalists seek to make campaigning for independence synonymous with Scottish pride and patriotism, including the Saltire.

Arch Stainton St George’s flag is just as nationalistic as the Saltire but can’t stir the passion as the Saltire does for Scots.

Andrew Mac I no longer identify with the Saltire, it reminds me of a pair of dirty soiled old Y-fronts.
