Magic of Christmas can be just another working day for some

- By BRIAN HENDERSON

Unlike politicians who have been threatened with a re-call over the festive period, farmers are well used to working over Christmas – and shoppers have been asked to support this year-round dedication by buying local for the festive season.

NFU Scotland said that not only does buying local cut down on food miles and guarantee traceability, but consumers should recognise that taking such an approach also helps farmers get a fairer deal for the food they produce.

“Visiting a local farmer’s market, a local farm shop or going directly to the farmer, ensures the meat and vegetables you are buying are produced to the highest of standards,” said union president Andrew Mccornick. He said thousands of farmers and crofters worked “day in and day out” to provide the produce many would enjoy over the festive period:

“Many continue to feed the beasts, milk the cows, and work on the farm during Christmas Day, and we’d ask consumers to show appreciation by making sure their festivities are as Scottish and local as possible,” he said.
