County leave it late but Watson winner puts them hot on the heels of five-star Ayr United

- By CRAIG P STEWART

Ross County left it late but responded to leaders Ayr United’s emphatic 5-0 win at Dundee United on Friday night with a 1-0 success at Alloa.

The second-placed Dingwall men had met Wasps goalkeeper Neil Parry in inspired form with the big shot-stopper keeping out efforts from Jamie Lindsay and Josh Mullin.

It looked like Parry had gained his side a point until Mullin sent a ball over to the back post where Keith Watson arrived right on cue to head the ball down and into the net.

County were overjoyed, with co-manager Steven Ferguson saying: “We did not think it was going to come no matter how hard we tried. Alloa deserve great credit for how well they defended however we kept on knocking at the door and, finally, we got in.

“We cannot influence what happens elsewhere, but we could influence this game. It was an important win.”

Alloa manager Jim Goodwin said: “I have no complaints, but I feel for the boys as they put a lot into the game.”

It was a memorable day for Falkirk who ended Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s 25-game unbeaten run and lifted themselves off the foot of the table. Tom Walsh fired Caley into the lead after six minutes but Zak Rudden headed the Bairns level 10 minutes later. Rudden put Ray Mckinnon’s side into the lead nine minutes from the break when he shrugged off the attention of Shaun Rooney and fired home.

It looked like the hosts’ unbeaten run was going to continue when George Oakley applied the finishing touch to a Rooney header but, three minutes into injury time, Scott Harrison’s deft flick from a Paul Paton free-kick earned all three points for Falkirk.

Itis Partick Thistle who now sit bottom after going down 1-0

at Queen of the South in controversial circumstances.

A point apiece had looked on the cards until deadly Doonhamer Stephen Dobbie lashed home with eight minutes to go.

The drama was not over as deep into injury time Thistle’s Blair Spittal looked to be tripped by Michael Doyle in the home side’s box but referee Steven Mclean surprised everyone at Palmerston by waving play on before booking Spittal for his reaction.

Dunfermline closed the five-point gap that sixthplaced Morton had on them bydefeatingthegreenockside 3-0 at East End Park. Aidan Keena scored after just three minutes when he tapped in after Robbie Muirhead had struck the woodwork.

Faissal El Bakhtaoui won and then converted a penalty before the break , with James Craigen netting just before the end to complete the scoring.
