Car mounts pavement before hitting pensioner

A man is in hospital with serious injuries after he was hit by a car which mounted the pavement outside a bank in Dalkeith.

The 72-year-old was walking along the High Street when the blue Vauxhall Corsa struck him about 2:30 pm on tuesday.

Police said the car is believed to have mounted the pavement accidental­ly.

The pedestrian was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.

Officers are appealing for informatio­n about the incident in the Midlothian town.

Sergeant Fraser Wood said: “Our inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstan­ces of this collision. However, we do believe the car mounted the pavement accidental­ly.

“I would appeal to anyone who was driving or walking in the High Street area of Dalkeith on Tuesday afternoon and who witnessed what happened to contact police as soon as possible.

“Anyone with any informatio­n to assist this investiga- tion is asked to come forward as soon as possible.”

The driver of the Corsa was not injured.

The road was closed for around three hours while police investigat­ed the scene and local diversions were put in place.
