Paatelainen parts ways with Latvia

- By MARK WALKER

Mixu Paatelainen has parted company with Latvia after just six months in charge of the national side following a disappointing spell in charge.

The former Hibs, Kilmarnock and Dundee United manager was appointed head coach of the former Soviet nation in the summer. But the Finn managed just one win in nine games – his first match as boss, in the Baltic Cup against Estonia.

Since then, Latvia have failed to win a game in the Nations League and twice failed to beat Andorra, while netting just twice in their six games.

The 51-year-old former Finland player and manager was released from his contract after they were drawn with Poland, Austria, Israel, Slovenia and Macedonia for Euro 2020 qualifying.

He was previously in charge of Finland for four years before an unsuccessful stint at Tannadice which saw Dundee United relegated.
