Scots end tournament on a high but fall short of reaching World Cup finals
Eve Muirhead and fellow Scot Bruce Mouat both finished on a high note at the World Cup in Omaha but neither did enough to reach last night’s finals in Nebraska.
Muirhead and her teammates Lauren Gray, Vicki Chalmers and Jennifer Dodds slipped out of contention after losing 7-2 to Swedish Olympic champion Anna Hasselborg, buttheyreturned later to hand Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa her first defeat of the week. The Scots won 5-2 to post their fourth victory in six group games, and they can now look forward to next week’s Grand Slam tournament in Newfoundland. “That was a great win against Japan and left us second in our pool,” said Muirhead.
Mouat and his team Hammy Mcmillan, Bobby Lammie and Grant Hardie failed to reproduce their European Championship-winning form as a 7-4 defeat by American John Shuster ended their hopes of making the final. They signed off with a 9-1 thrashing of China’s Qiang Zou for their third win. Like Muirhead, the Edinburgh skip is now bound for Canada, where he will bid to retain the National Grand Slam title.
