#BREXITVOTE

The sense of chaos that has enveloped the Government’s approach to Brexit was back with a bang as Theresa May announced a delay to the vote on her deal. The Prime Minister risked the ire of the Speaker as she told the House of Commons that she would seek “assurances” on the Irish border “backstop”.

@Patrickharvie opined: “Bercow can be criticised on many grounds, but right now he’s doing a better job of holding the government to account on the #Brexitvote than the main opposition party.”

@Danbloom1 reported: “MAY’S HOUR OF CHAOS: 11.19am: No10 says ‘the vote is going ahead as planned’, adding there’s no known statement to the Commons.11.30am: May starts call with Cabinet. 11.31am: Reports emerge vote is scrapped. 12.04pm: PM’S statement to the Commons confirmed.”

@Alexwickham added: “May pulled the vote after two groups of cabinet ministers told her to: loyal ones who said she’d be forced out when she lost by 100+, and ambitious ones who decided they couldn’t justify voting for the deal to Tory MPS and members.”

@Georgewparker noted: “Faced with two different sorts of humiliation, @ theresa_may opts for the one that makes it look like she’s running scared of a heavy defeat, rather than suffering a heavy defeat.”

#HUMANRIGHTSDAY

Charities and governments around the world marked Human Rights Day. The date is chosen to mark the events of December 10 1948, when the UN first ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

@Poulterwill posted: “Today is international #Humanrightsday. We still live in a world where justice is not afforded to everybody. A person’s human rights should not be any less based on race, gender or sexual orientation. Human Rights are everybody’s rights.”

@Tim_cook added: “70 years ago, the UN Declaration of Human Rights gave us a blueprint for a better world.”

@Atiku posted: “On #Humanrightsday let us remember those who have been persecuted because of their ethnicity, faith & political beliefs. The rights of one man/woman denied undermines the rights of us all. Today, we #Standup4humanrights until all people can freely enjoy their inalienable rights.”
