Rail threat

-

A shop owner in Edinburgh has vowed never to hire another staff member who relies on Scotrail to get to work.

Not sure employment law would allow him to discriminate in this way.

Ian Marshall

Employment law gives an employer some discretion as to who they hire being punctual. If a prospective employee can’t ensure punctuality, the employer has the right to refuse an offer of employment.

First and foremost, with any job is the ability to actually show up for the job, and in these cases it’s not really the employee’s fault that their only means of transportation is Scotrail. For smaller employers it’s really bad and you can understand the frustration.

Taliesin Conner I’ve been late for work about twice in the last nine months due to trains. Had more issues getting home because of cancelled trains though. In my previous job I drove and would be late about once a month due to traffic/ accidents/roadworks. I would rather travel on the train. I long for the days I could walk to work. Travelling to work in this country is a pain.

Heather Gibb

I don’t think Scotrail employs anyone who relies on Scotrail services.

Trains get cancelled halfway through your journey with no onward transport, and you are told you can claim for the delay, but not the extra cost of other means of getting home (taxis, buses etc) – if you have the money on you to do it. I’ve sent a grand total of 71 hours standing waiting on late trains, cancelled trains, getting home under my own steam (ironic that steam trains ran to time better), and this is since June.

Jefferson Burgess I relied on Scotrail for two years and only kept my job because my boss was so understanding. then cancelled, you would have been quicker on the bus.
