Seymour thrilled to extend stay

- By DUNCAN SMITH

Scotland wing Tommy Seymour will extend his time at Glasgow to nine years after penning a oneyear contract extension.

The 30-year-old, who moved into fourth on Scotland’s all-time tryscorer list when his hat-trick against Fiji last month took him to 19, joined Glasgow from Ulster in 2011.

He is the club’s second highest tryscorer, behind only DTH van der Merwe, and was the top tryscorer on the 2017 British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand.

Seymour said: “It’s a decision I’m very happy with. My family is very happy in Glasgow and it’s a club I feel a massive part of. Among the coaching staff and players I’ve made some great friends here and I can’t really imagine being anywhere else.

“There are so many things Glasgow as a club has enabled me to do in my career and I can’t thank them enough. I’m really proud and happy to be able to say I’ve been a part of this club for as long as I have.”

Glasgow coach Dave Rennie added: “Tommy is very highly regarded and has been an important part of the fabric here for a number of years. He is world class under the high ball and has electric pace. He’s a good man and we’re pleased he sees his future in Glasgow.”

Ronnie O’sullivan last night pulled out of the Scottish Open, less than a day after winning a record seventh UK championship.

The 24-year-old was due to face Daniel Wells today in the first round of the event in Glasgow.

Having defeated Mark Allen 10-6 to clinch the UK title in York on Sunday, O’sullivan had insisted he could continue to triumph in his sport’s generation game for another decade, citing the examples of Bruce Forsyth and Tommy Cooper as stars who continued to wow the crowds into old age.

“As long as I stay fit and healthy I think I’ve got another ten years of entertaining,” he said. “Bruce Forsyth was an entertainer, Tommy Cooper was an entertainer. People like to see people being entertained. If that’s what I do on the snooker table, I’m not going to deny people that.

“When it gets to the point where I don’t think I can give them enough to smile about, that’s probably when I’ll say it’s time.”
