Brexit timeline – countdown to leave

-

The remaining “countdown to Brexit” timeline is based on whether or not Parliament votes in favour of the draft EU withdrawal deal which Prime Minister Theresa May postponed at the last minute Cn Tuesday.

If Parliament does not vote in favour of the current deal then we will leave the EU with no deal.

However, the course of events are as follows if Parliament decided tp vote for the deal, meaning we leave the EU and move into the transition period in March 2019.

2019

Ratification of the withdrawal agreement by the UK Parliament and the European Parliament.

21 January –Ifthe government has not presented its withdrawal agreement by this date, powers for MPS to influence ministers’ next steps will kick in.

21-22 March – The final summit that the UK is expected to attend as a member of the EU.

Before 29 March – Parliament will have to pass the European Union (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill to implement the withdrawal agreement, assuming it has been approved by Parliament.

29 March, Brexit day –the UK ends its membership of the European Union at 23:00GMT and enters into a transition period.

The UK leaves the EU. A special summit of the 27 other EU countries soon after the UK’S exit is expected, but has not yet been scheduled.

2020

23-26 May – Elections for the European Parliament in 27 EU countries (the UK will no longer be represented in the parliament)

31 December – If all goes to plan the transition period is due to end and the new economic and political relationship between the UK and the EU to begin.
