Referendum rerun
Setting up a new referendum would not display a lack of respect for the result of the 2016 referendum.
The referendum showed that a majority of those who voted wished to leave the EU.
Voters were not asked to indicate what alternative trading arrangement they wished to be put in place of existing ones. Those matters were implicitly left for the Government to decide before we left. It now appears neither the Government nor parliament is able to decide what those alternative trading arrangements should be and thus cannot resolve the matter the voters left outstanding.
It would be loyal to the thinking behind the original referendum for parliament to now ask voters whether the Article 50 notice should be withdrawn and the existing trada ing arrangements maintained.
