Nearly a third of children do not reach the required level for literacy by the end of primary school, figures show. The statistics also reveal that the attainment gap in literacy between those from the least and most deprived neighbourh­oods grows during primary school.

Schools can take some responsibi­lity but parents are also responsibl­e. How many of the parents have helped their children from falling behind – reading to them, getting their children to read to them, help them with spellings and encouragin­g reading of books in the home? Same goes for other subjects. It’s a shame but children who succeed in school often have more support at home and parents who care more about education generally.

No surprise there. You just have to look at the standard of spelling and grammar on Facebook to see that a lot of folk are verging on illiterate.

Angela Heron Kids not being corrected on their work at primary school is where it is all going wrong. Looking through my daughter’s work at her last parents’ evening and noticing how much incorrect grammar and literacy was being marked as correct was worrying.

It might help if more kids actually read books. All too often, they’re not interested these days. A Kindle (or similar) for your kid this Christmas? Might really benefit them in the long run.
