Real crash to record home Euro defeat
CSKA Moscow inflicted Real Madrid’s biggest-ever home defeat in Europe when they won 3-0 at the Bernabeu last night.
But victory over a weakened Real side, who had already secured top spot in Group G, courtesy of goals by Fyodor Chalov, Georgi Shchennikov and Arnor Sigurdsson, wasn’t enough to even clinch third spot and a place in the Europa League. Viktoria Plzen took that slot by defeating second-placed Roma 2-1.
Bayern Munich held on to top spot in Group E, drawing 3-3 at home to second-placed Ajax. The Germans led through Robert Lewandowski before former Southampton midfielder Dusan Tadic fired a double as Ajax threatenedto leapfrog their hosts. But Lewandowski, from the spot, and Kingsley Coman put Bayern ahead before Nicola Tagliafico equalised in added time.
In the same group, Benfica defeated AEK 1-0.
