Taxing tourists

The Scotsman - - Perspective / Letters To The Editor -

Support for introducing a tourist tax in Scotland is growing fast and even the SNP have at last listened to good advice in seeing the advantage of introducing such a tax.

Setting it at a fixed £2 per head per night is unfair, and we need to learn from the tourist tax system in New York, where it is based on a percentage of accommodation cost, reflecting the standard and grade of the accommodation provided.

By applying the tourist tax on a selective city/town basis this will raise revenue for popular hotspots and encourage touristm in less popular areas.
