Andy Murray produced a superb fightback in what might have been his final match yesterday but eventually lost in five sets to Roberto Bautista Agut in the Australian Open first round. Murray, 31, struggled early on but had the Melbourne Arena crowd roaring as he took the third and fourth sets.

@Tenglishsport observed: “It’s Andy Murray’s playing career that’s ending, not his life. Onwards to the next adventure for the great man.”

@ruth_wishart commented: “What a journey, what a finale, what a hero. Thank you Andy Murray.”

@Ellyoldroyd asked: “If he’s still got the game to take a seeded player to 5 sets over 4 hours, while injured, and after a long break from competitive tennis, why would Andy Murray NOT want to try as hard as he can to make it to Wimbledon?”

@Deidrebrock added: “Good to see the Aussie crowd giving Andy Murray a hero’s send-off. Hope this isn’t the end of his career though, I’m hanging onto that ‘Maybe I’ll see you again’. A star.”

@Tyrone_m_smith commented: “This has been an incredible performance by Andy Murray, one which has summed up his entire career ... grit, guts and guile.”

Royal reporters followed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to Birkenhead yesterday as they visited a community café and citizens supermarket. During the visit, the Duchess told onlookers she was six months pregnant - the first time a due date for the couple’s first child has been revealed.

@Hannah_furness reported: “The Duchess of Sussex spoke to a mum-tobe, Angel, disclosing she does not know whether she’s having a boy or a girl but will be “thrilled with the outcome” either way. “Doesn’t it fly by?” she said.”

@emynash added: “Meghan has told wellwishers in Birkenhead that she is six months pregnant - due end of April/beginning of May. Lots of baby chat today!”

A draft version of a speech Theresa May was due to give on the sanctity of referendum results ahead of Brexit was mocked after it was revealed she voted as an MP against the creation of the Welsh Assembly back in 1997.

@stephenkb noted: “The Conservative Party voted not to proceed with creating the Welsh Assembly *after* the referendum result in 1997.”
