CSIC to fight waste with new partnership

- By HANNAH BURLEY

Construction Scotland Innovation Centre (CSIC) is teaming up with circular economy promoter Zero Waste Scotland in an effort to reduce waste in the construction sector.

Scotland’s construction industry accounts for onethird of the region’s overall waste sent to landfill and is the largest consumer of natural resources.

The tie-up will include a series of events promoting “innovative reuse, recycling and circular thinking” methods in the industry and future collaboration on sector-wide strategic projects.

The new partnership is set to build on the existing relationship between the two organisations, which already work in conjunction in the Deconstruction Hub, an initiative exploring how industry can maximise and retain the value in material assets.

Zero Waste Scotland has also become a member of CSIC’S Innovation Factory with the goal of increasing engagement in construction-related businesses and organisations.

CSIC chief executive Stephen Good said: “Reducing construction waste and encouraging circular economy approaches should be a priority for everyone in the sector, and there’s no doubt that it is increasingly becoming a driver for businesses.”

Iain Gulland, chief executive at Zero Waste Scotland, said: “The construction sector faces major challenges in reducing its waste but there are equally big opportunities for businesses to reduce costs and create new revenue streams in Scotland’s emerging circular economy.” 0 Stephen Good: Waste reduction is a ‘priority’
