Three key clashes that could decide the game
2 Oliver Burke has been a real hit for Brendan Rodgers’ side since joining on loan from English Championship outfit West Brom last month. The 21-year-old has been deployed as a striker during his short stint in Glasgow and is expected to lead the line against Valencia tonight in the first leg of the last-32 Europa League clash with Valencia. Valencia were a top team when they reached the Champions League final in both 2000 and 2001, only to lose to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich respectively. They won the Cup Winners’ Cup and UEFA Super Cup in 1980, before collecting the UEFA Cup and another Super Cup in 2004. The Blanquinegros qualified for an 11th UEFA Champions League group stage campaign this season after two years without European football but they dropped out after finishing behind Juventus and Manchester United in Group H.
This is the Spanish side’s fifth appearance in the last-32 of the Europa League and they have won all four previous ties against Club Brugge, Stoke City, Dynamo Kyiv and Rapid Vienna.
Valencia finished fourth in Laliga last season but are in eighth place at the moment, 20 points behind leaders Barcelona after 23 games.
They have lost only four league games this season but have drawn their last three matches – their most recent a goalless draw at home to Real Sociedad at the weekend. Indeed, Marcelino’s side have drawn 16 times this season, which started without a win in the first seven matches.
Marcelino took over from Voro (Salvador Gonzalez Marco) in May, 2017. A former midfielder with Sporting Gijon, Racing Santander, Levante and Elche, he retired through injury at the age of 28.
The former Spain Under-21 international counts previous coaching spells at
Zaragoza, Real
Racing Club,
Sevilla and Villarreal, whom he guided to promotion, three successive top-six
Laliga finishes and the 2016
Europa League semi-finals.
