Edinburgh’s tram line will be extended to Newhaven after councillors approved work starting on the £207.3m project.

@fergusboden wrote: “Edinburgh is a nightmare to drive in, and the North/east of city is already well serviced by buses. People coming from East Lothian would have to drive past an actual park and ride and multiple train stations, then into Leith, before getting the tram...”

@Iainmcfadden had another idea: “The obvious solution... a few more shiny buses and some creative thinking as to how to improve the disgraceful state of roads and pavements in the city.”

@Iansommerville quipped: “So, Edinburgh Council decides to spend another £207m on trams. With their track record, did they consider what else they could do with £400m.”

@brucerisk posted: “Edinburgh’s most densely populated area...leith, will benefit enormously with the extension to Newhaven. Clean, smooth and efficient...”

Nicola Sturgeon has called on Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard to “get on the phone” to UK party leader Jeremy Corbyn to secure his backing for a People’s Vote on Brexit.

@Arwynlloyd wrote: “It’s now apparent that the position of the Tory & Labour parties is not to offer a 2nd ref. This after breaking a key leave pledge to negotiate before A50 & a court ruling that criminality had occurred in the leave campaign. @Nicolasturgeon now is your moment. You have a mandate.”

@Wilbo0001 added: “JC was voted in as Labour leader and was lauded as this socialist messiah and my friends derided me when I said he was fake and another WM puppet – I now say, ‘I told you so.’”

Labour supporter @ Jamiekstaniforh wrote: “Evidence of the EU only wanting what’s best for their ‘unelected selfs’? It’s Labour policy to respect the outcome of the referendum and it’s the Tories in power, negotiating and making a total pig’s ear of Brexit.”

@Alexx_mcarthur added: “Just imagine what could be achieved if Labour stopped listening to its UK PLP and got behind independence & the SNP towards a better Scotland.”
