Bennett set to line up at centre for Heriot’s in semi-final against Currie

- By GARY HEATLY

0 Mark Bennett: Reallocated. Scotland cap Mark Bennett is set to play for Heriot’s in the Tennent’s Premiership playoff semi-final against Currie on Saturday.

The 26-year-old returned to full fitness last month after he ruptured a hamstring while playing for Edinburgh Rugby against Ulster last September and spent five and a half months on the sidelines.

He made his return for the pro team off the bench against Cardiff Blues in the Guinness Pro14 and then was among the replacements last time out against Benetton.

However, with Matt Scott back fit after a concussion issue he starts in the centre tonight with James Johnstone against Leinster and Chris Dean is the outside back replacement. As a result Bennett, who came through the ranks at Cumnock and Ayr, is available to Heriot’s for their big match at Goldenacre.

At the start of the campaign Bennett was allocated to Boroughmuir in the pro draft but, in the play-offs, the players are reallocated. Fellow Edinburgh man Murray Mccallum and Scotland Sevens’ Jack Cuthbert are also available meaning they will be the first professionals to turn out for Heriot’s in 2018-19.

Currie have two pros in their 22 with Glasgow’s Thomas Gordon joined in the pack by Edinburgh’s Luke Crosbie.

In the other semi-final, Ayr will play Melrose.
