Aberdeen fans have started a campaign to have their bull mascot immortalised as a playing piece in a new official Monopoly board honouring the city.

Angus the Bull has emerged as a clear favourite after Monopoly bosses launched a poll to find six Aberdeenthemed playing “tokens” for the customised board game, which will go on sale later this year.

Fans across the Granite City are backing their football club’s match-day mascot to replace one of the traditional pieces including the boot, racing car and Scottie dog.

Other suggestions include a miniature of the club’s legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson as well as a dolphin, an oil rig, a helicopter, a giant seagull, a haddock and the city’s heraldic leopards.

is an Aberdonian “rowie”, or buttery bread roll, while some others have suggested a sheep should be made into a playing piece.

A Monopoly spokesman said: “We’ve been absolute-

ly spoiled for choice with the most wonderful suggestions pouring in for tokens.

“There has been a plethora of animals from the dolphin to the leopard, which is a heraldic symbol of the city.

“But the animal symbol of Aberdeen that has won most votes so far is Angus the Bull. There has been an enormous campaign for Angus. We will study each and every suggestion once polls have closed.”

Winning Moves UK, who will make the game under official licence from Hasbro, have announced that Aberdeen will be the next Scottish place to be honoured with a board, following Edinburgh getting a board last year. The city beat other locations including Glasgow, Dundee and Inverness, which were also in the running for 2019.

The new board will feature around 30 city streets and landmarks, with Marischal College, Castle Gate, Union Terrace, Aberdeen City Hall, the University of Aberdeen and Aberdeen Airport among the front runners to “Pass GO” for the game.

Members of the public can vote for unique playing pieces, aswellaschanceandcommunity Chest cards.

Monopoly was first introduced in 1935 and has since been played by more than 500 million people in 114 countries around the world.

Aberdeen last appeared on a Monopoly game board in 2006. The new board will be available from this October from all major retailers, and online.

Besides Aberdeen, six other Scottish cities – Edinburgh, Perth, Inverness, Dundee, Glasgow and Stirling – have featured on official Monopoly boards.
