Grumpy looks in winning mood

● Varian gelding primed to go well on Lingfield debut

- By GLENDALE

Call Me Grumpy can lift the Monday blues in the sunracing.co.uk Handicap at Lingfield.

Roger Varian’s five-year-old, still relatively lightly-raced, is visiting this venue for the first time for what will be the 12th race of his career.

Call Me Grumpy has run close to his best on his last two starts, at this seven-furlong trip at Wolverhampton and Kempton over the past month.

He had previously had just one outing in more than 520 days, so was still getting his eye in again when he finished a half-length runner-up as a strong favourite at Dunstall Park in February.

The gelding has been dropped 1lb for his two-and-aquarter-length third last time, and looks primed to go well on his Lingfield debut.

Gumball can make it two from two on the Flat in the Betway Novice Stakes.

The Philip Hobbs-trained gelding looked set to take high rank in the juvenile hurdling division after winning his first two starts in Britain last season, but his form subsequently tailed off. But there was plenty to like about Gumball’s defeat of high-class mare V er dana blue at kemp to na month ago and he can follow up in the hands of Oisin Murphy, pictured.

Klopp may be the answer in the Ladbrokes, Home Of The Odds Boost Handicap at Wolverhampton. Antony Brittain’s filly heads south after finishing only second at odds of 2-5 in a Newcastle handicap. That was still a decent performance, though, and Klopp has sound prospects of recording her third win of a consistent winter campaign.

At Wincanton, Keiran Burke’s Mine’s A Pint should go well off a light weight in the South West Racing Club Handicap Chase.

The Network gelding made a smart start to his career over fences at Plumpton on his latest appearance and is open to further progress – having run just six times under rules.
