Du Plessis out to ‘rattle’ former team-mates in quest for European glory

- By GARY HEATLY

Glasgow Warriors’ prop Petrus Du Plessis wants the side to “rattle” Saracens and really take the game to them in the Heineken Champions Cup quarter-final on Saturday.

The Scots go to Allianz Park to take on the English giants with 37-year-old Du Plessis having had a foot in both camps.

He played 158 games for Saracens between 2009 and 2017, a period in which he won the Champions Cup twice and the English Premiership three times.

The South African joined the Warrior son loan from london Irish earlier this season and said: “It would be good to rattle Saracens. I’d like to see them rattled. I’d like to see Glasgow take it to them in the scrum and have a go at them.

“We had a meeting between some of the senior players and the coaches recently and we had a discussion and said on the quarter-final day the team that does what they do best to the best of their abilities will come out on top.

“I think the Glasgow backline is extremely dangerous, that is a massive plus point for us and we feel it is where we can really hurt Saracens.

“Up front we have done our homework and the work [forwards coach] Jonathan Humphreys does with the pack is unbelievable.

“I think we can match or outplay them in areas such as the maul and the scrum and defence is going to play a massive part.

“If we can stay in our system then we have a chance.

“I think the guys will put the international game [between England and Scotland] to the side for this one. I know that as soon as the Saracens guys gets back from England stuff their minds are always straight away on Saracens.

“The main thing on Saturday is that this game is going to be almost international standard, all of the matches at this stage of the competition will be.”
