Dump the Royals

Christine Jardine’s article (Perspective, 25 March) was otherwise admirable, but I would suggest rather more drastic action as regards the House of Lords than simply renaming it. Abolition would be infinitely preferable.

While we’re at it, we should also consider, in an effort to provide the framework for a much more modern and fair society, disposing of the monarchy, along with royal patronage and privilege.

I utterly fail to understand the Brexiteer’s evident distaste for EU unelected elites usurping our sovereignty, when we have world class examples here.

That said, the elected elites

aren’t terribly clever either, so the only logical way out of this Brexit impasse is for the prime minister’s deal to be put to a people’s vote – that or remain. And we haven’t even begun the debate on what our future relationship with Europe will be. Please, the nightmare must end now.

Now that I’ve got that off my chest, I had better sign that petition.
