Eye opener
Janine Bolger highlights the importance of sound and evolving training for social workers (Friends of the Scotsman, 26 March).
My Scottish social work training 1968-1971 was innovative.our group of students had extensive practice in communication skills and role play, as well as teaching in the important theories of psychology sociology and human behaviour. We did placements in a variety of settings. My first one was in Martin House, a challenging Edinburgh hostel for homeless women, run by the indomitable Miss Ethridge, Truly an eye opener!
I hope today’s social work students will look back on their training as warmly and gratefully as I do on mine.
