Unify the people

-

A “leader” with greater wisdom, or perhaps simply a greater modicum of commonsense, than Mrs May possesses

would have recognised that her task was not only, as she sees it, to “implement Brexit”. Just as significantly she would have understood the indispensable need to attempt to heal the great divide in society caused by the closeness of the gerrymandered referendum outcome.

She has refused to recognise

the legitimate concerns of the 48 per cent who voted Remain. She has failed to see the longer term significance of the million who marched on Saturday and of the 5.8 million (at the time of writing) who have so far voted in support of the online petition to “Revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU”. I will be reminded that 52

per cent of those who voted in June 2016 voted Leave. However that simplistic application of arithmetic will fail to heal the great divide.

After all, that percentage represents only 37 percent of the electorate: a small percentage for a constitutional upheaval of this magnitude, there having been no threshold.

And Mrs May ought to reflect upon the possibility that a recent poll (Social Attitudes Survey) suggesting that 55 per cent now wish to stay in the EU indicates the present will of the people.
