Fuel throttle

-

Mary Church of Friends of the Earth Scotland is demanding that the Scottish Government ban fracking through legislation (your report, 25 March). She said it was needed to “protect people’s health, environment and the climate from the fracking industry”.

Ms Church ignores reality in Scotland, where emissions are 0.13 per cent of global levels. Does she really think that nations will not use the world’s plentiful supply of fossil fuels? China, responsible for 30 per cent of global emissions, has the largest shale gas deposits in the world and is about to exploit them.

Ms Church needs to be reminded that in 2017 the Advertisingstandardsauthority (ASA) ruled that Friends of the Earth were unable to substantiate claims that fracking chemicals were dangerous to humans, caused asthma, brought a risk of cancer and polluted water tables.

ASA warned FOE never to repeat these and other misleading and unsubstantiated claims. Obviously, Ms Church is treading carefully.
